About Roy Heng
Roy Heng is a guitarist, writer, and teacher who is committed to cultivating others’ love of music. Originally hailing from Manila, the Philippines, Roy moved to New York City at four years old, then to Fargo, North Dakota at nine. He began playing guitar at the age of ten, starting with steel string acoustic fingerstyle songs before later transitioning into classical music.
As a teenager, he played electric guitar, steel string acoustic guitar, and electric bass in church bands and musical pit orchestras in the Fargo-Moorhead area; he was selected to be the guitarist of the Fargo-Moorhead Honor Jazz Band and the ND All-State Jazz Band in 2019 and 2020. Roy is also the founder and bandleader of the J-Pop cover band Jank (じゃんく), whose first recordings will be released in August/September of this year!
Roy is able to teach a variety of musical styles—including classical, fingerstyle, funk, rock, and pop/contemporary music—on nylon classical, steel string acoustic, and electric guitar. He always pushes his students to practice and improve, but takes care to ensure that they are never uncomfortable or stressed in doing so. His teaching philosophy is to put his students’ enjoyment of music first, as he believes a wholehearted love and interest in music is the best fuel for one’s growth as a musician and person.
Roy is currently studying classical guitar under Julian Gray at the Peabody Institute and attends the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University.
