About Joyce Hongsermeier
Dr. Joyce Elaine Hongsermeier has been studying, performing and teaching music throughout her life. Her primary interests have centered around piano and voice
performance, and teaching of relevant technical, historical, and musicianship/theory skills to others. Her students have ranged from ages 3 to 74 and from beginning to advanced levels.
Dr. Hongsermeier wants her students to learn the language and history of music, and the technical skills that will enable them to play or sing as beautifully and as satisfyingly as possible. She also wants her students to realize their strengths and weaknesses as musicians, and encourage them to work to improve their skills as they continue their musical journeys beyond what you do in your lessons together.
Dr. Hongsermeier has earned B.M., M.M., and D.M.A degrees from Hastings College, Hastings, NE, the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins Institute, and The Catholic University of America respectively. Areas of concentration included piano and voice performance, music education, choral conducting, and piano pedagogy. She also holds Kodaly Methodology/Musicianship, Suzuki Piano, and Edwin Gordan Teacher Certificates.
Her Doctoral dissertation is entitled: “Kodaly-Inspired Musicianship Training and The Beginning Piano Student: Integrating Musical and Technical Skill Development.”
Dr. Hongsermeier’s performance experience includes piano and voice solo recitals, piano collaborations in duos, chamber, and as accompanist for voice and instrumental soloists, and choral singer or conductor for programs in Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington D.C.
